Behavior of reinforced concrete frames infilled by masonry

Abstract

The behavior of masonry infilled reinforced concrete frames was investigated under static in-plane loading. Three infilled frames and one bare frame of one-third scale were subjected to a horizontal load until failure. Behavior modes and failure patterns were recorded for each frame, as well as loads at the occurrences of cracks in the frames and infills. Effects of different beam-to-column moment of inertia ratios on behavior and ductility was investigated for the different configurations. Deformations o f the masonry infills and their confining frame were recorded by linear strain converters. Plots of horizontal load vs. shear distortion in terms of interstory drift indices were made. Results of all tests were analyzed, discussed, and compared to results from diagonal testing of infilled specimens previously carried out at the University of New Brunswick.
