An evaluation of leachate management at sanitary landfills

Abstract

Leachate p r o d u c e d from s a n i t a r y l a n d f i l l s c an c a u s e m a j o r p r o b l e m s in t h e e n v i r o n m e n t - It i s v e r y i m p o r t a nt t h a t t h i s l e a c h a t e p r o d u c e d i s managed i n a n e f f e c t i v e manner. An e v a l u a t i o n of t h r e e l a n d f i l l s in Canada was p e r f o r m e d t o s t u d y t h e method u s e d t o manage t h e l e a c h a t e . These t h r e e l a n d f i l l s i n c l u d e : t h e F r e d e r i c t o n R e g i o n a l L a n d f i l l , The Highway 101 R e g i o n a l L a n d f i l l ( H a l i f a x ) , and t h e K e e i e V a l l ey L a n d f i l l ( M e t r o p o l i t a n T o r o n t o ). Some common methods used t o p r e d i c t t h e q u a n t i t y of l e a c h a t e p r o d u c e d were a l s o e x a m i n e d . This i n c l u d e s the W a t er B a l a n c e Method and t h e c o m p u t e r model HELP.
