A solar heated fuelwood drying kiln : improvements and testing
Williams, W. A. (1982). A solar heated fuelwood drying kiln : improvements and testing.
Abstract
A solar heated fuelwood drying kiln is an economically feasible method for homeowners to dry firewood. Insulation, ventilation, and the addition of a second layer of plastic were tested to determine the usefulness of each. Results show that cut and split firewood undergoes significant weight loss during the winter period from November to February. It is- suggested that the kiln be equipped with an outer layer of tarpaper for waterproofing, ventilation, and a double layer of plastic on the window for optimum drying times. Insulation was deemed unnecessary as was a heat storage system. Key Words: solar heated kiln, fuelwood drying, firewood seasoning, accelerated firewood drying.
