Timber bridges have been used extensively on forest access roads throughout the Maritime provinces for many years. The majority of these bridges have been constructed without prior design guidelines. Most forest planners utilize existing designs that have worked successfully in other areas. This method was employed by the staff of the Maritime Forest Ranger School and resulted in some uncertainty as to the structural abilities of their bridges. A structural analysis of the eight timber was performed using the methods outlined in the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code and the results are presented and discussed.
