The purpose of this report is to investigate the reasons why the concrete slope erosion protection under a number of highway overpass and underpass structures is failing. The report begins with an examination of the construction leading up to and including the placement of the concrete slabs. The three causes of failure are then described. The first two methods of failure are due to ground water seepage while the third type is due to surface runoff. The recommended remedial measures include a geotextile which will be designed for both soil retention and drainage. The cost of the geotextile fabric and related design features is then evaluated.
