A design alternative for the thermal protection of permafrost beneath large heated structures with heavy floor loads requiring "at grade" entrances was researched. The choice of design alternatives is the ventilated gravel pad foundation. A computer spreadsheet style computer program was developed to design and analyse the ventilated foundation. An example application has been included in the report.
