Several tests were performed on ALCELL® lignin, a by-product of the ALCELL® pulping process, to determine i f the as-produced lignin can formulate a superplasticizer for addition i n concrete. As-produced ALCELL® lignin did not display plasticizing properties though i t did demonstrate potential as an air entraining admixture. An efficient method for evaluating candidate superplasticizers has been acquired from the research done on ALCELL® lignin. This method will disclose substances which are not superplasticizers or which entrain excessive amounts of air before a great deal of resources have been wasted. During the evaluation of ALCELL® lignin i t was revealed that a more efficient procedure than those currently available to determine the effective time of a superplasticizer could be developed. Although this procedure was not obtained, significant steps towards reaching this goal were achieved. Only one obstacle remains i n the development of this new test for superplasticizers.
