dc.description.abstract | Site factors were studied in relation to site index of black spruce CPicea mariana (MiII.) B.S. P.) at 48 sites in northeastern New Brunswick. At each sampling location, the four tallest trees were felled and through data collected from subsequent stem ana lyses, the mean site index was determined for each location. At each site, the soil texture, actual rooting depth, LFH layer thickness, profile drainage, moisture regime, topographic position, percent slope and aspect were determined. Subjective variables were analyzed for their effects on site index through standard t-tests. Regression analysis techniques were used to evaluate the effects of objective variables. The relationships between site index and the various site factors could not be conclusively established. Inadequate sampling of sites at either end of the range of site quality was suggested for the apparent lack of significant | |
