Abstract

T h i s study was undertaken to determine the f e a s i b i l i ty o f amalgamating the towns o f Newcastle? New Brunswick and Chatham, New Brunswick and s u r r o u n d i n g communities, t o form a M i r a m i c h i C i t y. T h i s study examines the background to the amalgamation issue on the M i r a m i c h i . I t c o n s i d e r s the requirements f o r c r e a t i n g a c i t y in New Brunswick. S i m i l a r s i t u a t i o ns i n o t h e r areas are compared to the M i r a m i c h i amalgamation i s s u e . The proposed M i r a m i c h i C i t y i s t h e n compared t o the o t h e r New Brunswick c i t i e s . F i n a l l y , the advantages and disadvantages of amalgamation are d i s c u s s e d. The major c o n c l u s i o n from t h i s study i s t h at amalgamation, i n the M i r a m i c h i area, i s f e a s i b le but i t r e q u i r e s a l o t o f work to acheive f r u i t i o n. The f i r s t step towards amalgamation, and the c r e a t i on o f a M i r a m i c h i C i t y , should be a p r o f e s s i o n a l study examining, i n depth, the v a r i o u s b e n e f i t s and costs i nvo1ved.
