Abstract

Four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) survey are used to examine the impact of retirement on health in China. Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity design, retirement is found to have a health-preserving effect on general health and the findings differ across gender. In particular females experience a statistically significant increase in physical activity and social support as well as in general health after retirement. In contrast males experience a statistically insignificant change in these behaviors as well as general health after retirement.
