Design alternatives for the thermal protection of permafrost beneath highway embankments in northern regions were studied. A one dimensional finite element heat flow model was used to evaluate the thermal response of various embankment alternatives. The research produced design guidelines for the choice of artificial insulation or increased embankment thickness for a specified depth of thaw penetration. An example application has been included to illustrate the procedure for optimizing a thermal protection alternative.
