The study area is a sulphide/oxide mineralized zone within the Devonian age Goodwin Lake Gabbro. The Farquharson Zone is the site of an extensive diamond drill program by numerous companies to establish the economic potential of a large geophysics anomaly. Copper and nickel occur as chalcopyrite and pentlandite respectively, throughout the zone in minor quantities. The sulphide phases with which these minerals are associated are magmatic in origin, stemming from the evolution of a Sulphur saturated silicate melt.
