Abstract
This report investigates the effect of corrosion on high strength bolts.
One hundred A325 bolts were tested in a model of a structural steel joint. Fifty of these were cadmium plated and fifty were regular A325 bolts. The bolts were subjected to three degrees of corrosion, field, shop and pulp mill.
The results of this testing suggests that the bolts be installed in accordance with CSA-S16.1 M84, with the exception of the cadmium plated bolts in the field corrosion condition. These bolts should be installed by rotating the nut 2/3 of a turn from snug tight.
