Abstract

There exists, today in India, an acute shortage of fuelwood among the rural poor. This report addresses the situation, examines the nature, cause and extent of the problem and discusses the energy options that are available today in India. A plan is formulated to tackle the problem. Three technical solutions are advocated: planting fast-growing trees, community biogas plants, and the introduction of improved cooking stoves. Consideration is given to the socio-economic and political factors involved when implementing a program of this type.
