Item The effect of forest harvesting on shallow groundwater levels : a comparison of pre- and post- harvest water table levels, Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick(University of New Brunswick, 1998) Hyndman, Norah J.; MacQuarrie, Kerry; T., MacQuarrieThe Catamaran Brook Groundwater Study is a paired catchment experiment instigated to quantify the effects of forest harvesting on shallow groundwater levels in central New Brunswick, Canada. Monitoring and calibration has been ongoing since 1993; cutting of the mixed hardwood/ softwood stand occurred in late 1996. Analysis of the data from the first 18 months post-harvest suggests a maximum increase in groundwater levels of approximately 30 cm, this result being realised only during periods of hydrograph recession. Diurnal effects of evapotranspiration are observed and quantified using White's Equation. The result shows a significant decrease in evapotranspiration coincident with the loss in vegetative cover.
