Item The ‘Miserable parent’ and the ‘Luckless tribe’: a Thucydidean approach to journalism(University of New Brunswick, 2019) McPhee, Emma; Sears, MatthewAs the situation of journalists becomes increasingly precarious in the 21st century, more than ever journalism must reinvent itself to remain relevant in the frenzy of the digital age. Furthermore, the current model of journalism — based on the concept of objectivity and rooted in a news function — no longer adequately serves its public. It is therefore perhaps ironic that the solution to these problems may be found, in part, in the 2,500-year-old work of Thucydides. But Thucydides, who was far from the objective reporter of the Peloponnesian War many would like him to be, would have a lot to say about our current model of journalism, and his actual intentions for his History may offer a way forward for the journalists of today.
