Large eddy simulation of dual impeller baffled mixer
(University of New Brunswick, 2017) Robichaud, Jonathan; Gerber, Andrew
A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for industrial baffled mixer is introduced. Mixer configurations with single and dual impeller were simulated at Reynolds numbers of 100, 1000, and 10,000, and the model results are compared to experimental data. The CFD model is used to calculate the fluid forces acting on the agitator (or impeller) and extract the fluid added mass, damping, and stiffness coefficients. These coefficients are then utilized in a rotordynamic model with the structural parameters of the agitator to predict the stability and mean square amplitude of vibration. Novelties introduced in this research include the use of a GPU based solver, the use of immersed boundary techniques to simulate baffles, and the extraction of fluid added coefficients on a dual impeller agitator configuration.
