Item Leachate control in landfills(University of New Brunswick, 1995) Smith, Millage; G. Ward; G., WardMunicipal solid waste facilities are a fact of life for all large communities. They hold the paper, waste wood, vegetable matter, plastics, metal . cans, and other solid wastes that are discarded in the normal course of daily life in the community. Landfills work by biologically degrading the material, and in the process produce toxic liquid and gaseous byproducts. Public concern about the toxic liquids coming from the landfill is growing. Collection, control and treatment of landfill leachate is a major industry costing each municipality yearly. This paper discusses the various methods available to control the production of leachate. It focuses on protecting the working face of the landfill from infiltration by temporarily covering it with a roof. The structural, economic and environmental feasibility of this solution is discussed.
