Abstract
This project is a joint venture undertaken with the UNB physics department, designed to explore fibre optic sensor technology for use in reinforced concrete structures. The primary objective of the project is to conduct laboratory testing of a fibre optic strain sensing system attached to a reinforced concrete member. Strain measurements from the fibre optic system and from standard electrical resistance strain gauges were compared to determine the accuracy of the fibre optic sensors. Additional research was conducted to examine the effect of prolonged exposure to concrete on fibre optic cables. Testing was completed using fibres embedded in concrete and fibres immersed in an alkaline solution created to simulate the concrete chemical environment.
