Abstract

Exercise and physical activity are crucial for people with lower limb loss (PwLLL) for improving strength, balance, and overall health. However, only 28% of PwLLL meet current physical activity guidelines compared to 49% of the general population. Inadequate hip strength and trunk endurance were identified as potential barriers in physical activity participation. The purpose of this study was to improve our understanding of the relationship between hip strength, trunk endurance and physical activity participation in PwLLL. Fifteen PwLLL completed hip strength, trunk endurance, physical activity and functional mobility assessments. Contrary to the study hypothesis, hip strength was not significantly associated with physical activity participation, however, prosthetic-side trunk lateral endurance was. Hip strength and trunk endurance demonstrated significant relationships with multiple gait and functional measurements. These findings may help clinicians better understand the factors influencing physical activity participation and inform rehabilitation strategies aimed at improving long-term health outcomes for PwLLL.
