Abstract
The intent of this report is to document the work of this group that has been done
throughout the year with regards to the boat lift project. To begin this project time was
spent researching various existing designs and doing background research. This was done
to gain an understanding of common designs and practice. Background research was done
to gain knowledge of preexisting designs and methods that will help formulate a design
that is unique from existing designs, and without this background research it would be
much more difficult to create a design or concept. It could also be possible to unknowingly
copy a preexisting design without research. After background research was done and a
baseline of knowledge on the topic was created then multiple concepts were created that
share some common aspects of existing designs and incorporate other aspect unique to this
design group. These multiple design concepts were rated and their feasibility and
appropriateness were considered. Using a decision matrix it was determined which design
concept was best suited for this application and should be pursued further. Using this
method of selection means that the chosen concept is guaranteed to meet the design criteria
and best meet the client’s needs. Since the concept design had been finalized there have
been many hours spent optimizing the specific details of the design. This also include the
analysis which covers all crucial areas of the design such as the cable lifting system, the
frames and links, and the various joints and pulleys that will be used to manipulate the boat
lift. The analysis is used to observe the kinematics, forces, and stresses acting on the
structure. The purpose is to focus on building a device that is designed to have an optimized
lifespan as well as function for as long as possible without fault, while also considering
cost and availability of materials or components. At the point of this report being submitted
the analysis has almost been finished, with only a few updates required for future changes
to the design. The CAD for the boatlift has been completed and many engineered drawings
may be found in this report, along with the analysis completed on the components to ensure
the boat lift will be able to withstand the environment it is subjected to.
