Abstract

Re c e n t l y a f e w a c c i d e n t s h a v e o c c u r e d i n t h e U . N . B . C i v i l E n g i n e e r i n g S t r u c t u r es L a b o r a t o r y d u e t o p o o r l i f t i n g p r o c e d u r e s o f l a r g e c o n c r e t e t e s t m e m b e r s . T h e s e a c c i d e n ts h a v e r e s u l t e d i n u n s a f e w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n s . T h e r e f o r e , t h e r e w a s a n e e d t o i m p r o v e t he e x i s t i n g l i f t i n g p r o c e d u r e s. T h e b e n t r e i n f o r c i n g b a r t y p e i n s e r t w a s t e s t e d i n o r d e r t o c o m p a r e t h e r e s u l ts o b t a i n e d f o r u l t i m a t e f a i l u r e l o a d w i t h t h e f a i l u r e l o a d f r o m t h e l a s t a c c i d e n t . I t w as c o n c l u d e d t h a t b e n t r e i n f o r c i n g b a r s s h o u l d n o t b e u s e d d u e t o t h e i r u n p r e d i c t a b l e f a i l u re l o a d s a n d b r i t t l e n e s s.
