C i v i l E n g i n e e r i n g S t r u c t u r es L a b o r a t o r y d u e t o p o o r l i f t i n g p r o c e d u r e s o f l a r g e c o n c r e t e t e s t m e m b e r s . T h e s e a c c i d e n ts h a v e r e s u l t e d i n u n s a f e w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n s . T h e r e f o r e , t h e r e w a s a n e e d t o i m p r o v e t he e x i s t i n g l i f t i n g p r o c e d u r e s. T h e b e n t r e i n f o r c i n g b a r t y p e i n s e r t w a s t e s t e d i n o r d e r t o c o m p a r e t h e r e s u l ts o b t a i n e d f o r u l t i m a t e f a i l u r e l o a d w i t h t h e f a i l u r e l o a d f r o m t h e l a s t a c c i d e n t . I t w as c o n c l u d e d t h a t b e n t r e i n f o r c i n g b a r s s h o u l d n o t b e u s e d d u e t o t h e i r u n p r e d i c t a b l e f a i l u re l o a d s a n d b r i t t l e n e s s. T h e d r o p - i n e x p a n s i o n a n c h o r s t h a t are p r e s e n t l y b e i n g u s e d n e e d t o b e i m p r o v e d . S w i v e l h o i s t rings that t h r e a d i n t o t h e a n c h o r w o u l d w o r k b e s t . T h i s t y p e o f l i f t i n g d e v i ce w i l l a l l o w t h e c h a i n h o o k s t o b e a t t a c h e d s e c u r e l y. A s p r e a d e r b e a m w a s d e s i g n e d i n o r d e r t o s i m p l i f y t h e h a n d l i n g a n d l i f t i n g o f l a r ge a w k w a r d m e m b e r s t h a t a r e e n c o u n t e r e d i n t h e S t r u c t u r e s L a b o r a t o r y . T h e s p r e a d e r b e am h a s f i v e c o n n e c t i o n s w e l d e d t o t h e b o t t o m f a c e o f t h e b e a m t h a t a r e e v e n l y s p a c e d a nd a l l o w f o r d i f f e r e n t p o i n t s o f l o a d i n g t o b e c o n s i d e r e d f o r v a r i o u s s i z e m e m b e r s .
