This thesis reports on some of the characteristics of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), provenance trials currently being carried out in the Maritimes and an outline for a suggested future provenance trial. Fros.t and drought are the two factors which are likely to be · the rnos.t limiting to the growth of Norway spruce in the Maritimes, especially when planted on unsuitable sites or when an inappropriate provenance is used. The provenance trials currently under way will supply very useful information as they are assessed, however, a future trial covering all of the Maritimes and testing a variety of sites and large enough to permit yield studies with comparisons to native species would be extremely valuable if Norway spruce is to be used on a large scale in the Maritimes.
