This report is a preliminary study of the passive solar kiln situated at the Maritime Forest Ranger School. It deals mainly with the qualitative observations, but these are backed up by recorded temperatures and moisture content readings. The difficulties involved in drying wood are examined from both a microscopic and a macroscopic level. Thus, the conditions necessary, inside the kiln for the wood to dry are established. The present and future market for dried lumber is examined. The costs and times required for alternate drying methods which the solar kiln must compete with, are also examined. From this study it is evident that the passive solar kiln has potential, but more work is needed before it can be applied to the industry. Major difficulties in the efficient operation of the kiln are reported and possible solutions are discussed.
