dc.description.abstractA small New Brunswick First Nations municipality is responsible for providing safe and clean drinking water to their community of approximately 2740 people. In recent years, the municipality has noticed elevated concentrations of iron and manganese in their drinking water wells. The existing water treatment system was designed with an allotted space for a future iron and manganese removal system. This report proposed a treatment train using proprietary media filters specifically engineered for iron and manganese oxidation and removal by using a modified selection strategy to choose a solution that was targeted toward smaller populations. The selection strategy developed in this report can be used as a framework for other small communities looking to alleviate iron and manganese concerns from their water system. Based on population and flow projections completed until the year 2050, three 2-metre diameter pressurized proprietary media filters operating in 2 duty/1 standby mode were required.
