Growing concern has emerged regarding the connection between U.S. military service and right-wing extremism (RWE), yet empirical research on this relationship remains limited. This thesis addresses this gap by quantitatively examining military experience and extremist affiliation among individuals charged in the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot and in the broader Profiles of Individual Radicalization in the United States (PIRUS) dataset. Logistic regression, chi-square tests, and descriptive statistics are used to estimate the likelihood of extremist involvement by military background, controlling for demographic factors, and to explore variation across service branches, organizational affiliation, and geographic characteristics. Findings indicate a statistically significant overrepresentation of veterans in right-wing extremist groups relative to their share of the U.S. population, with notable clustering by branch. The study contributes to scholarship on extremism by highlighting how military socialization and identity may intersect with ideologically motivated unlawful behavior.
