Abstract

This thesis traces the movement of the Christmas tree through the market and industry structures and their related effects upon it. A discussion of the grading structure and the relation of grades to cultural practices is also reviewed. The Christmas tree industry in the Maritime Provinces (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick) can be an important source of supplemental income for the woodlot owner. It can only achieve this stature if Christmas tree stands are under management. Through the use of thinning, pruning, shearing, shaping, and fertilizing a more valuable product is placed on the market. The problems, needs and weaknesses of the industry are reviewed. An attempt is made to give an unbiased view of the production and marketing of Christmas trees in the Maritimes. It is a viable industry which deserves attention
