Abstract
The sluice gate is a common control device used in hydraulic engineering. In designing such gates, the hydraulic engineer has to be able to develop the approximate head-discharge relationship for various positions of the gate. The purpose of the present study is to determine the discharge based on various geometric parameters. Through extensive laboratory testing and manipulation of known formulas, discharge models will be determined for three main flow conditions. These conditions include the following:
- flow through a gated structure with no gate effect,
- free jet flow through a gated structure, and
- submerged jet flow through a gated structure.
By inputting the flow condition and various other parameters, the discharge may be accurately determined for the studied conditions.
