Abstract

This report compares two methods of developing breakthrough curves, the experimental and the analytical, for multi-layered sands in a test column. The report shows a graphical comparison between the two testing methods and makes conclusions as to the cause of differences in shape. The tests were performed with the equipment previously developed for the course, CE6773, Contaminant Hydrogeology, to demonstrate dispersion characteristics through a single layer of sand. Slight modifications enabled the testing of multiple layers. The analytical portion of this report concentrates on derived dispersion coefficients and the superposition of what is termed a 'unit breakthrough curve' of 10% concentration. The report discusses the principles of contaminant flow, the required design changes, the testing procedure, a description of the analytical development method using superposition, and a comparison of the test results to the analytical.
