Abstract
Sciaridae is a creative writing thesis that follows multiple perspectives, disjointed through time, as characters encounter a supernatural phenomenon originating from the First World War. Now, a century after the end of WWI, the long-term mental impact of the war has drifted out of the public consciousness and most perception of the war relates to military heroism and physical devastation. The characters in this story, soldiers and scholars, are faced with the psychic impact of global turmoil, both personal and collective, made manifest as uncanny creatures that terrorize them. These traumatic manifestations haunt them far beyond the boundaries of the battlefield, following them home and taking new shapes. This story is an exploration of the value of the monstrous in representing the less tangible aspects of conflict.
