Retention of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) graduates and immigrants in New Brunswick

Abstract

This report examines the retention of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) graduates from New Brunswick’s public post secondary institutions and permanent residents with ICT skills. Using linked provincial administrative data from 2005 to 2023, the study analyzes graduation trends, inflows of ICT skilled immigrants, and the demographic and occupational factors associated with remaining in the province over time.

Findings show that while New Brunswick has seen a growing number of both ICT graduates and ICT skilled newcomers, long term retention varies considerably across groups. College graduates remain in the province at higher rates than university graduates, and student origin plays a significant role in mobility patterns. Among permanent residents, the Provincial Nominee Program is associated with stronger retention than other immigration pathways. The results highlight the importance of understanding the conditions that support long term settlement and labour force stability in New Brunswick’s ICT sector.
