dc.description.abstractBuilding energy consumption occupies an increasing proportion of the total energy consumption of society, and windows are the main factor affecting the energy consumption of buildings. The use of energy-efficient windows can have great significance for energy saving. This thesis report examined the energy efficiency of various types of windows of the buildings on the University of New Brunswick campus, Fredericton, Canada. The energy performance of these windows was monitored by a thermal camera from October 2021 to March 2022 and assessed in terms of the temperature difference ratio between different windows. It was found that (1) The temperature distribution of a window was strongly influenced by the indoor and outdoor temperature of a room. (2) The east orientation for a building and the use of Low-E glazing were the most effective expedients to reduce the winter energy required. (3) Fixed windows had better energy performance than sliding windows and single-hung windows. (4) Wood frame windows showed better insulation properties than metal frame ones. (5) Using curtains could help reduce heat loss. It is recommended to examine the energy efficiency of windows with various types of glazing systems and window frames. New building technologies such as Low-E glazing can be explored and used in the buildings located in a cold climate.
