Abstract

There is a need in the precast concrete industry for connections that are able to address tolerance errors. A self-aligning bolted connection for precast concrete wall panels was developed that uses an internal frame for alignment and accuracy. This thesis outlines the design and testing of the connection which included determining the optimal material for the frame as well as in-plane strength. Component testing of the connection and system were conducted for in-plane tensile loading. The testing considered the effect of varying the configuration of the connection and the anchorage methods used. The constructability and fit of the connection were also investigated through the construction and assembly of three reinforced concrete wall panels using the connection. The construction and assembly processes were compared to a typical connection used in precast concrete construction projects to assess its ability to address tolerance errors and its impact on the overall process.
