Southern New England and New York specimens of Spyridia ‘filamentosa’ were sequenced for the mitochondrial COI-5P and chloroplastic rbcL genes and determined to be distinct from Mediterranean (type locality) specimens of the same taxon. A little-known species name, S. americana Durant, is applied to specimens collected from the northeastern coast of the United States.
